What is 'Alpha' in the context of an actively managed mutual fund?

EXPLANATION
Alpha measures the excess return generated by a fund manager over the benchmark index return, after adjusting for risk. A positive alpha indicates the fund manager has added value through active stock selection. A negative alpha means the manager underperformed the benchmark.
