Which chapters are hardest to pass?

Based on Passlane's question bank performance data, these four chapters have the lowest average accuracy — and together account for approximately 41% of the total exam paper.

Chapter 4

Legal and Regulatory Framework

12%

Most SEBI regulations, AMFI circulars, and offer document provisions. High volume of regulation-specific questions with similar-sounding options.

12%

EUIN, ARN, commission disclosure rules, and AMFI code of conduct — heavily tested with exact regulatory wording.

Chapter 6

Fund Accounting and Valuation

10%

NAV calculations, expense ratio formulas, and load structure arithmetic. Calculation-heavy. One wrong formula = wrong answer.

Chapter 10

Financial Planning and Mutual Funds

7%

SIP calculators, goal-based scenarios, and asset allocation logic. Application-based, not factual recall.

Chapters 1, 2, and 12 are consistently the highest-scoring for Passlane users. Prioritise the Hard chapters above.

The three mistakes that cause NISM V-A failures

Most first-attempt failures are not because the exam is difficult — they are because of avoidable preparation errors.

01

Reading the workbook without practising questions

The NISM exam tests application, not memorisation. Chapter 4 alone has 40+ possible question formats derived from 30 pages of SEBI regulations. Candidates who only read fail at application questions. The fix is immediate: read one chapter, attempt 20 questions on that chapter, review every wrong answer, move forward.

Try chapter-wise practice questions →
02

Mismanaging time under exam pressure

NISM V-A has no negative marking — every question attempted is a chance at a mark. The failure mode is running out of time. Candidates who spend too long on uncertain questions reach the final 10–15 questions under a rushed clock, making avoidable errors. The rule: move through questions at a steady pace and come back to uncertain ones.

03

Treating all 12 chapters as equal priority

Chapters 4, 6, 7, and 10 together account for ~41% of the paper and carry Hard difficulty ratings. Spending equal time on Chapter 1 (5% weightage, Easy) and Chapter 4 (12% weightage, Hard) is a preparation error. Allocate study hours proportional to weightage × difficulty.

From NISM V-A to ARN: what happens after you pass
